Nathan Phaneuf - Somewhat of an Art blog....
This blog is really just dedicated to random bits of visual stimulation, preferably of my own creation.

Blocktronics ANSI Piece
Here I'll cut and paste an email from RaDMaN (founder of the ACiD art group I was a part of as a teenager in the 90's) to introduce a really cool ANSi collaboration in development:
There is an ANSI group called Blocktronics, they're the only persistently active ANSI group of the 21st century.
They're doing a tribute to ACiD in their next pack, and the name of that artpack is "Blocktronics: ACiD Trip". It will be released the end of October.
We have a PabloDraw server up. I don't think you've ever used PabloDraw, so I will explain it like this: Imagine an IRC chat room plus a 10,000 line ANSI/ASCII art canvas that anyone can edit.
On a busy night we get about 12-16 of the old veteran ANSI artists showing up and drawing. I've attached some examples of that massive work in progress. It's a record setter. By a landslide. It's 2,500 lines long. We're actually pushing the boundaries of what PabloDraw can even do (on Windows, at least).
Everyone is invited and encouraged to draw. Even if you don't think you have the knack any more, by all means please stop by the server and say hello. Lord Jazz, aXd, and Spear are logged in right now, drawing.
And here is the piece they're working on -

Old ANSi Artwork - Nathan Phaneuf / King Midas
I'm going to post some of the art I did when I was 15-17 years old - back when I was a full fledge computer nerd. This is before the web came about and we would utilize our modems to call into BBS's. these are the graphics you would see on those sites.
Just to show you how dumb I was at 16, here is the tag at the top of the graphic (my handle was King Midas)
Not sure how to long story short this - but I got involved with making artwork for BBS's and eventually joined a group of local artists. As my art got around I was recruited by ACiD (see Rad Man - he still has a big online presence), a national art group. Anyhow this art was my life for this short period of time.
Here's a detail of one of my pieces (1996?)
And here is the full image (keep in mind this is small because we had much less resolution back in the day - and only 16 colors to work with!)

Me / We show from Beep Beep Gallery (2011)
Here is an article that details this show with a favorable write-up of my pieces: LINK
Anyhow they are collaboration pieces between two artists. My artist partner was Sarah Daly.
Here is her oil painting - which was a bit of a problem for me since I can't put acrylic paint (spray paint) on top of it -

So instead I had to go with cut paper. Here was my solution:
I actually found that particular building by using the street view of Google Maps. What city did I look in? Detroit of course!
So here was my piece that she had to add to:
And here was her addition to it (pretty cool!):
Both of our pieces sold, so that was a good show. Super fun to collaborate in that fashion with other artists and I hope the guys at Beep Beep do it again...
